Boniface Helps Leverkusen Snatch Late Draw Against Dortmund To Stay Top

December 03, (THEWILL) – A late goal from forward, Victor Boniface, secured Bayer Leverkusen a 1-1 home draw with Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, allowing them to remain unbeaten and top of the Bundesliga table.

Dortmund had taken an early lead through Julian Ryerson in the 5th minute and looked on course for victory until Boniface’s equaliser in the 79th minute. The result means Leverkusen stay three points clear at the top, although second-placed Bayern Munich have a game in hand.

Dortmund came into the match and started strong, with Ryerson finishing off a lovely backheel assist from Niclas Fuellkrug. Leverkusen turned up the pressure after falling behind but struggled to break down the Dortmund defence until manager, Xabi Alonso, introduced Patrik Schick off the bench.

Schick made an immediate impact, sliding a perfect pass for Boniface to tap in from close range. Both teams had further chances to find a winner, but a draw was a fair result. Alonso made sweeping changes from Leverkusen’s Europa League win midweek, but will be satisfied with remaining unbeaten across all competitions.

For Dortmund, the draw ends a run of three straight Bundesliga wins but keeps them within touching distance of the competition.
