Boniface Brace Powers Leverkusen Past Gladbach

August 26, (THEWILL) – Victor Boniface was the hero for Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, scoring two goals to lead his side to a 3-0 victory over rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.

The win at Borussia Park was a statement result for Die Werkself as they look to bounce back after a disappointing season in 2022. Boniface, a summer signing from Belgian side Royale Union SG, opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Reacting quickly to a lofted header from teammate Alejandro Grimaldo, the Nigerian headed the ball into the net to make it 1-0. Jonathan Tah added a second for Leverkusen right before half-time.

22-year-old Boniface was not done yet, scoring his second in the 53rd minute after combining well with Florian Wirtz. Wirtz played a pinpoint through ball to Boniface, who finished confidently despite pressure from a defender.

It was a brilliant performance from the young Nigerian striker, who had also notched an assist in Leverkusen’s first game of the season against RB Leipzig. His two goals were the difference in Leverkusen’s derby victory.

Boniface was substituted in the 88th minute, receiving a standing ovation from Leverkusen supporters after his match-winning contribution. The win sees Leverkusen move up to second place in the early Bundesliga table. He will look to continue this form when they host SV Darmstadt on Saturday while Leverkusen will take on defending champions Bayern Munich.
