Boko Haram Bombs Bridge Linking Borno To Gombe

SAN FRANCISCO, July 13, (THEWILL) – A highway bridge along the Maiduguri-Biu-Gombe road linking Borno to Gombe State was blown up Sunday morning by Boko Haram insurgents, thus dashing the hope of travellers travelling to Gombe through Biu from Maiduguri, the state capital.

The insurgents have recently taken over most part of the Maiduguri-Biu-Gombe Highway causing great pains to motorists as they are now made to take the longer Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum road.

Motorists and the road users are now left with no other option than to link up with little motorable road to Gombe and oftentimes have to travel back to the southern part of the state.

The Boko Haram gunmen were said to have blown up a major part of the bridge with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) thus leaving motorists and passengers stranded in the early hours of the day.

A local resident, Mallam Musa Yakubu, who gave a graphic detail of the incident to THEWILL, said a loud bang was heard at about 2am on Sunday when people were asleep.

“We heard a loud bang on Sunday morning when we gathered in Madafuma village to go round our surroundings early in the morning. We found out that the bridge linking us with Biu Local Government Area and Ma Dara Girau has been blown off, all motorists heading to Maiduguri from Biu especially long vehicles had no option than to make u- turn back to Gombe.

“Unfortunately, small vehicles had to manage the remaining thin portion which has not been affected in the blast, but it is very risky,” Musa explained to THEWILL.
