September 12, (THEWILL) – Romelu Lukaku proved his goalscoring remains undimmed as he netted a quickfire brace to lead Belgium to a 5-0 home victory over Estonia in their latest Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday night.
Despite a lack of playing time at club level this season, Lukaku extended his record international tally to 77 goals for Belgium with two typical poacher’s efforts within the space of just two minutes midway through the second half. His goals put the result beyond doubt after earlier strikes from Jan Vertonghen, Leandro Trossard and a late effort by substitute Charles De Ketelaere.
Veteran defender, Vertonghen, opened the scoring in the fourth minute, getting a slight touch to head home a corner. Trossard then doubled Belgium’s lead in the 18th minute, unleashing a strong right-footed shot into the top corner from the edge of the area after being allowed time and space to advance.
Estonia had earlier hit the woodwork through Henri Anier but offered little attacking threat thereafter as Belgium’s superior quality shone through. Lukaku’s quickfire double after the break killed off any faint Estonian hopes of a comeback.
The dominant victory keeps Belgium top of Euro 2024 qualifying Group F on goal difference from second-placed Austria, with both teams having 13 points from their first five matches. Belgium will look to capitalise on their strong position when they continue their qualifying campaign away to Austria next month.
