January 28, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich’s struggles continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt at their home grounds in the Allianz Arena.
The reigning champions have now drawn their first three games of the year and their lead at the top of the Bundesliga has been cut to just one point. Leroy Sane put Bayern in front in the 34th minute, but Randal Kolo Muani equalised for Eintracht in the 69th minute.
Union Berlin’s win over city rivals Hertha Berlin earlier in the day leaves them hot on Bayern’s heels, while Leipzig and Freiburg are two and three points behind respectively. This is the first time since 2007 that Bayern have gone three league games without a win to start a year, during which head coach, Felix Magath, was replaced by Ottmar Hitzfeld.
Eintracht’s leveller extended their unbeaten league run to six matches and kept them in both top-four and title contention. Muani has been directly involved in 17 goals in his first 17 Bundesliga matches, which is more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues, except Lionel Messi, Neymar and Erling Haaland.
Bayern will now switch their focus to the DFB-Pokal as they travel to Mainz on Wednesday, with hopes of getting back to winning ways, while Eintracht will host Hertha in their next league outing.
