November 14, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich have announced the signing of 17-year-old Australian football starlet, Nestory Irankunda, who will join the Bundesliga champions on July 1, 2024, on a long-term contract.
The talented forward, who turns 18 next February, will move to the German giants from A-League club Adelaide United. Bayern’s Director of Youth Development, Jochen Sauer, described Irankunda as “an extremely quick winger, a strong dribbler and finisher with good drive towards goal”.
Born in a Tanzanian refugee camp after his Burundian parents fled fighting, Irankunda has already represented Australia at under-17 level. He trained with the senior Socceroos squad in March 2023 and was selected for games against Colombia and Ecuador but did not feature.
At just 17, Irankunda is considered one of the brightest prospects in Australian football. His pace, dribbling and eye for goal have marked him out as a potential future star. Securing his signature is seen as a coup for Bundesliga champions Bayern.
Sauer said Bayern are “convinced by his potential” and believe Irankunda will continue his development with the German giants. The youngster will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous Australian players who have shone at Bayern, such as Harry Kewell.
