February 02, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich secured a 4-0 victory over Mainz in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals, ending their winless run in style.
Eric Choupo-Moting scored one goal and assisted another, while Manchester City loanee, Joao Cancelo, also recorded an assist on his debut. Bayern dominated the match from the start, with Choupo-Moting scoring just 17 minutes into the game.
The visitors doubled their advantage when Jamal Musiala struck a pinpoint left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner after Thomas Muller’s delicate pass. Leroy Sane then calmly finished from Choupo-Moting’s through-ball as a rampant Bayern ran riot in the first half.
Substitute Alphonso Davies sealed the victory in the second half, nodding Joshua Kimmich’s right-wing cross past the keeper. Mainz tried to mount a comeback after the interval, with Anthony Caci whipping a rare chance narrowly wide. However, Bayern continued to dominate and Mainz needed Alexander Hack, to clear Muller’s deflected attempt off the line to keep the score at 4-nil.
With this win, Bayern remains on course for their first DFB-Pokal triumph since 2020. The team will return to Bundesliga action at Wolfsburg on Sunday, after Mainz visits Union Berlin the day before.
