September 30, (THEWILL) – Bayelsa United pulled off a stunning 5-3 victory over Akwa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Thursday. The hosts scored five goals including a Robert Mizo hat trick, in a thrilling encounter at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
The match started with a high tempo as Mohammed Hadi opened the scoring for Akwa in the 20th minute. Bayelsa responded quickly and levelled the score in the 27th minute through Jerry Alex.
Oguntayo Seyi restored Akwa’s lead only for Robert Mizo to find the back of the net for both sides to go into the break tied at two all. For the second time in the game, Seyi gave the visitors the lead after restart and, similarly, Robert Mizo stepped up again to restore parity in the 81st minute.
Mizo then gave the hosts the lead for the first time six minutes later. It looked to be finishing on these terms, with Akwa unable to find the net again, but Eyong Ofem added gloss to the scoreline with a fifth for Bayelsa.
The final whistle blew and Bayelsa United celebrated their remarkable win over Akwa United, who are currently bottom of the NPFL table. The result moved Bayelsa United to the top of the table, while Akwa United are at 20th.
