April 25, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles’ defender, Calvin Bassey, has been awarded the Rangers’ 2021/2022 Men’s Young Player of the Year.
On Sunday night, the Nigerian left-back and other winners, were honoured with their prizes.
Bassey had to fight his way into the starting eleven under two different managers this season, Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst and has demonstrated why he remains a standout player for the Light Blues.
This season, the 22-year-old has played in 44 games across all competitions, helping Rangers reach the Europa League semifinals and the Scottish FA Cup final.
Speaking with Rangers TV after earning the award, Bassey said: “It’s an amazing feeling especially on the club’s 150th anniversary. It’s just amazing to win this award and all the hard work I’ve put in over the past year recognised.
“It has been amazing, all credit to the team, fans and manager for trusting and believing in me. My teammates push me every single day, so it’s not just for me, but for everyone there working hard with me.
“This is the part of the season where the rewards are given. You know we are still in the league, Scottish Cup and Europa League so there’s a lot to play for and we’re just focused on taking each stage as it comes, to get better and be prepared for the challenges ahead.”
Bassey follows in the footsteps of Joe Aribo, a fellow Nigerian, who was voted Rangers’ Young Player of the Year for the 2019/2020 season.
Both Aribo and Bassey, however, were bypassed for the club’s Players’ Player of the Year and Men’s Player of the Year honours. Instead, club captain, James Tavernier, was chosen for the Players’ Player of the Year gong, while Alfredo Morelos was named Men’s Player of the Year by fans.
