February 27, (THEWILL) – A hamstring issue is set to prevent Robert Lewandowski, from playing for Barcelona against Real Madrid in the Clasico on Thursday.
In La Blaugrana’s shocking 1-0 loss to Almeria on Sunday, Lewandowski suffered an injury, while the relegation-threatened side denied Barcelona the chance to extend its lead over Madrid at the top of La Liga to 10 points.
The 34-year-old will not play in this week’s Copa del Rey semifinal first-leg match at the Bernabeu, and he might not play in league games against Valencia and Athletic Club as well, due to the injury. There is every likelihood that on March 19, when Barcelona hosts Madrid in La Liga at Camp Nou, Lewandowski should be fit enough to feature.
However, the issue that Xavi Hernandez’s side faces goes beyond losing the Polish striker. They will also be missing Gavi and Raphinha this weekend against Valencia in addition to the injuries to Dembele, and Pedri.
This is a tough patch for the Catalan club whose 4-3 aggregate loss against United caused them to be eliminated from the UEFA Europa League, a trophy for which they were considered one of the top favourites to win this season.
