September 04, (THEWILL) – Barcelona moved within two points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid with a dramatic 2-1 victory away at Osasuna on Sunday.
The Catalan giants looked to be cruising to three points when defender Jules Kounde headed them in front on the stroke of half-time. However, Osasuna equalised through Chimy Avila’s fine strike with 15 minutes remaining.
There was to be another twist in the tale though, as Barca were awarded an 85th minute penalty when Robert Lewandowski was fouled in the area, leading to a red card for Alejandro Catena. Lewandowski kept his composure to convert the spot-kick and secure the win.
It maintains Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the 2023/2024 campaign, with the club having now won three of their opening four league matches this term. They join second-placed Girona on 10 points, just two shy of rivals Real Madrid at the summit.
The result will provide a timely boost as the domestic League breaks for the international window. Barcelona’s next match will be in two weeks against Real Betis at home while Osasuna are away at Getafe in their next match in the Spanish top division.
