July 18, (THEWILL) – Early on Monday, Barcelona officially announced the transfer of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, the Ballon d’Or runner-up from the previous year.
The incoming 34-year-old Lewandowski scored 50 goals across all club competitions last season, making it seven seasons in a row with at least 40 goals. He has scored 33 goals overall in his last three Champions League campaigns, seven more than his nearest rival, Karim Benzema of Real Madrid, who has 26 goals.
Bayern had the option of keeping a dissatisfied player and then losing the captain of Poland on a free transfer the next year, but they decided to cash in and accept Lewandowski’s persistent request to join Barca.
Despite having financial issues, the Catalan club managed to put together a deal that was reportedly worth €50 million, which was sufficient to persuade Bayern to sell their star forward.
Lewandowski’s transfer to Barcelona was confirmed in principle on Saturday by Barcelona, with the signing of the contracts and his passing a medical was the only remaining requirements.
