September 30, (THEWILL) – Barcelona edged past Sevilla 1-0 on Friday evening, thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Real Madrid legend, Sergio Ramos. The victory sees Barca move to the top of the La Liga table ahead of Real Madrid and Girona’s clash on Saturday.
The match was an even affair for much of the first half, with both sides creating chances but unable to find the breakthrough. Joao Felix and Ivan Rakitic came closest for their respective sides, both striking the woodwork with their efforts.
The second half saw Barcelona start to dominate possession and create better openings. However, they struggled to seriously test Orjan Nyland in the Sevilla goal. Rakitic had another great chance to put the visitors ahead with a glancing header in the 73rd minute but was off target.
Two minutes later, Barcelona took the lead in a comical fashion. A cross into the box by Lamine Yamal ricocheted off the knee of Ramos and looped over his own keeper into the net. It was a cruel moment for the veteran defender, who had been enjoying an excellent performance up to that point.
Barcelona held on comfortably in the closing stages to claim an important three points. The win underlines their title credentials this season as they moved one point clear at the top of the table. Next, they play Porto away from home in the UEFA Champions Napoli on Wednesday.
