May 09, (THEWILL) – Barcelona Femeni beat Rayo Vallecano 6-1 for their 29th league victory of the season, breaking Levante’s record of wins in the Primera Ibedrola, which dates back to the 2000/2001 season.

As characteristic as the win was for Barca’s Ladies, the team had to surmount considerable obstacles beginning in the 10th minute.

Rayo Vallecano took an early lead thanks to a penalty, and winger Ingrid Syrstad Engen was sent off as a result. Coach Jonatan Giráldez was also dismissed for objecting to the decision.

It was not the start Barça had hoped for, but they went on to not only win, but do so emphatically, breaking the league record by winning the first 29 games of the season.

It was not the first time in recent weeks that Barça had conceded the first goal, but they came through with dedication, teamwork and overall better performance as usual.

After 20 minutes, Aitana Bonmati equalised for the Catalans with a Caroline Graham Hansen assist, and the same duo repeated the feat shortly before the interval to make it 2-1 at the break.

Despite being down one player throughout the second half, Barça showed their superiority. Marta Torrejón scored from a corner, then goals from Claudia Pina, Jenni Hermoso, and Bonmati, who completed her hat trick, gave the League champions the win.

The Catalan ladies have proven to be impressively unstoppable this season. This time, they produced the same result even with the numerical disadvantage that saw them play most of the first half and all of the second with nine outfield players and the keeper.

They will now turn their attention to the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in Turin, which is now only a few weeks away.
