September 26, (THEWILL) – Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the La Liga season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe on Wednesday. Robert Lewandowski’s goal in the 19th minute proved decisive at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
Despite creating numerous chances, Barcelona were unable to extend their lead. The home side registered 16 attempts but failed to find the net again. Getafe, still seeking their first win of the campaign, were unable to capitalise on Barcelona’s wastefulness.
The league leaders faced the match with a depleted squad due to injuries. Notable absentees included Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season, along with Dani Olmo, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo, Fermin Lopez and Andreas Christensen. Manager Hansi Flick also opted to rest Pedri for the fixture.
Lewandowski’s goal came from an error by Getafe goalkeeper David Soria. The Polish striker took advantage of the mistake to put Barcelona ahead, a lead they would hold onto for the remaining 71 minutes of play.
The result sees Barcelona extend their winning streak to seven matches in La Liga for the 2024 season. Getafe, meanwhile, suffered their fourth defeat of the season and remain without a victory.
