June 13, (THEWILL) – The Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Jibrin Barau, has emerged as the new Deputy Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
Barau emerged as the new Deputy Senate President on Tuesday, after he was returned unopposed. He was nominated by Senator-elect Dave Umahi and supported by Salihu Mustapha.
He was subsequently declared the new Deputy Senate President by the Clerk of the Senate.
Earlier, Senator Godswill Akpabio was elected Senate President after he defeated Senator Abdulaziz Yari.
The former Akwa Ibom governor was returned elected as President of the 10th Senate after scoring 63 votes, defeating Senator Yari, who scored 45 votes.
Akpabio and Barau are the preferred choice of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the position of senate president and deputy senate president, respectively.
While Akpabio succeeds Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is also a member of the 10th Senate, Barau succeeds Senator Omo-Agege, the APC governorship candidate in the March 18 gubernatorial election in Delta State.
