Backlash Prompts England FA’s Defence Of England Kit Colour Alteration

March 22, (THEWILL)- The England Football Association has responded to the controversy stirred by the decision to change the colours of the St George’s cross on the back of England’s new home shirt. The traditional red cross of the England flag has been replaced with a purple and blue colourway on the back of the collar, reminiscent of past training gear, including the iconic 1966 World Cup-winning squad.

This alteration has triggered criticism, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cautioning Nike against tampering with the flag, and numerous fans expressing frustration online. A petition advocating for the reinstatement of the original flag has garnered significant support.

In a statement addressing the outcry, the FA defended its choice to modify the flag’s colours while acknowledging the significance of the original design. The statement highlighted the new kit’s tribute to England’s historic football achievements, particularly the 1966 World Cup victory. The coloured trim on the cuffs, inspired by the attire of England’s legendary players, is echoed in the design on the back of the collar.

Gareth Southgate’s team will debut the controversial kit during their upcoming match against Brazil at Wembley Stadium. Despite the alterations, the FA assures fans that the red and white St George’s cross, symbolising unity and inspiration, will still prominently feature at the stadium.

Nike, the manufacturer of the kit, described the 2024 home kit as a blend of tradition and modernity, with the cuff trim and collar design paying homage to England’s football heritage.
