The Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UniUyo), Prof Christopher Ekong, has declared a new era in the institution, warning that his administration will not tolerate “cutting corners” in infrastructure, academic administration and other aspects of the university’s operations.

The Command said it had commenced a full-scale investigation into the incident, which occurred at about 7:05 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following an allegation that the deceased attempted to steal a motorcycle.

The warning is contained in an analysis by Nairobi-based Senior Finance Business Partner, Brian Muloni, titled “Exodus Generation: Why Are Africa’s Young People Heading West?”

The school, originally established by the Methodist Mission in 1939, was commissioned on Monday as part of the administration's efforts to upgrade educational infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning across the state.

According to a Police statement endorsed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John and made available to journalists in Uyo, the operation, carried out at about 6:05 am on Tuesday, followed credible intelligence on the activities of a suspected kidnapping syndicate allegedly preparing to strike within the Oron axis.

The landmark reconciliation was reached on Monday, during a high-level peace meeting at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Nyong Ekong, involving the university management and representatives of surrounding host communities.

Essien, a resident of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was intercepted at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, Ikot Ekpene, following what the Police described as credible intelligence.

Eno, who expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work at the estate, warned that the contract would be terminated if the contractor, Western Legacy Investment Limited, failed to meet the new completion targets.

The operations, conducted on Saturday, September 5, 2026, followed directives by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, for the dismantling of criminal hideouts and elimination of black spots considered threats to public safety.
