July 19, (THEWILL) – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on the verge of joining Marseille from English Premier League side, Chelsea, as part of their pre-season preparations.
The 34-year-old has reached an agreement on a three-year contract with the Ligue 1 side and is set to undergo a medical in Germany. Although the deal is yet to be finalised, both clubs are optimistic about its completion. Aubameyang is eager to start afresh under new Marseille coach Marcelino after enduring a disappointing season at Chelsea, where he struggled to find regular playing time.
The negotiations for Aubameyang’s transfer have encountered some complexities, mainly concerning the potential costs involved. As Aubameyang is still under contract with Chelsea until next summer and earns a substantial weekly wage of over £160,000, a compromise was necessary to facilitate the move. Marseille was determined to secure the striker’s services but faced financial constraints in meeting Chelsea’s demands.
Nevertheless, progress has been made, and Aubameyang is excited about the prospect of featuring in Marseille’s squad. The ex-Gabon international’s time at Chelsea was marked by limited opportunities following the departure of former head coach Thomas Tuchel. Despite his previous successful collaboration with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang struggled to make an impact during a turbulent season at Stamford Bridge.
With this move to Marseille, the 34-year-old aims to reignite his career and contribute significantly to the team’s future successes. They finished third in Ligue 1 standings last season and are in contention to feature in next season’s UEFA Champions League through a qualification series.
