August 29, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid produced a stunning second-half performance to thrash Rayo Vallecano 7-0 on Monday night and move up to second place in the La Liga table.
Diego Simeone’s side led 3-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann, Memphis Depay and Nahuel Molina. However, they turned on the style after the break, scoring four times in just 13 minutes.
Alvaro Morata grabbed a quickfire brace to make it 5-0 before Angel Correa and Marcos Llorente added further goals. It was a hugely dominant display from Atletico, who have now won two out of three in the league. The result leaves them on six points, two behind leaders Real Madrid, who have a 100% record after three games.
Rayo had won their opening two matches of the season but had no answer to Atletico’s attacking prowess. The home side simply had no way of dealing with the visitor’s pace, movement and clinical finishing. It was a chastening defeat for Rayo who were hoping to build on their impressive start.
On Saturday, Rayo will take on Real Betis away from home to try and get their campaign back on track. Atletico will host Sevilla on Sunday.
