SAN FRANCISCO, May 23, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid on Tuesday defeated Nigeria 3-2 in a friendly played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Yusuf Salisu, coach of the Eagles’ Team B, went with a lineup featuring none of the World Cup-bound players while the Spanish team, coming off an Europa League final win over Marseille, opted for a strong lineup.
The Spanish side came from behind to win the match despite Super Eagles B team took the lead through Kelechi Nwakali’s goal at the 32 minutes of the encounter.
Atletico replied almost immediately through Correa who benefitted from the inexperience of the Eagles’ defenders.
The Spanish side continued to press but it was Nigeria who came closest to taking the lead before halftime, however, Destiny Ashadi missed a sitter.
In second half, substitute Fernando Torres restored the lead for Atletico after dictating the pace of the game for large spells.
In the 80th minute, Tosin Omoyele teed up Usman Mohammed who equalized for the hosts with a brilliant solo effort which brought memories of former Eagles’ captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha.
However, Borja Garces netted the winner for the LaLiga side with five minutes left.
