Atalanta Hold Inter To Goalless Draw, Top Spot Open For Milan

January 17, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan might be overtaken at the summit of the standings in Serie A by city rivals AC Milan on Monday after a stalemate tie with Atalanta on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri entered the game with a one-point advantage at the top of the table, but despite having chances to record a victory and earn all three points, they ended up deadlocked in a goalless draw.

Victory over Spezia on Monday evening will see Milan, who currently trail Inter by just two points, leapfrog them to claim the top spot.

Edin Dzeko got the opening chance of the game, rising high and directing a header past the post. Alexis Sanchez also came close, with Juan Musso – who had an outstanding day – saving a well-hit effort from the Chilean.

Atalanta had a terrific chance of their own just before the break, when Matteo Pessina met Remo Freuler’s cross and forced a reflex save from Samir Handanovic.

The second half was also quite open. Dzeko put Musso into action at the near post 10 minutes after the restart, and he also went close with a header.

Arturo Vidal, a substitute, then hit a long-range shot that tested the Atalanta goalkeeper, while Danilo D’Ambrosio was unable to convert the rebound.

The hosts had two fantastic chances as the game approached its conclusion, but neither Luis Muriel nor Merih Demiral were able to convert.

There was still time before the end of the game for each goalkeeper to make one more outstanding save. Inter captain Handanovic denied Mario Pasalic with a strong hand, while Musso kept D’Ambrosio out.

Inter maintained their record of just losing once in Serie A this season after the final whistle went. The Nerazzurri’s next match is against Empoli in the Coppa Italia.
