October 08, (THEWILL) – Atalanta manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, was left with mixed emotions after his side’s 3-2 defeat away to Lazio on Sunday. While disappointed with the result, the Italian felt there were both positives and negatives to take from the performance.
Gasperini praised his players’ character and effort, but was critical of substitute, Ademola Lookman’s attitude after coming off the bench. Lookman showed visible frustration after being brought on in the second half with the score at 2-2.
The manager said: “Lookman’s attitude was poor, it was almost as if being a substitute was unacceptable to him, which is the wrong mindset.” He added: “We are a team, and whether you start or come off the bench you have to give your all.”
Despite Lookman’s reaction, Gasperini said he could not fault the team’s desire to get back into the game after going two goals down early on. Atalanta rallied to level before a late Lazio winner by Matias Vecino denied them a point.
The 3-2 loss leaves Atalanta sixth in Serie A after eight games. Gasperini will be looking for a response when they face Genoa after the international break.
