ASUU Set To End Strike, Signs MoU With Federal Government

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, December 11, (THEWILL) – The protracted strike by university teachers in the federation will be suspended next week following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government on Wednesday.

President of the university teachers union, Dr. Nassir Faggae, told journalists after the signing ceremony that the demands of the union were included in the deal that led to the signing of the MoU.

Faggae said the 5-month old strike will be called off next week after a meeting of the executive council of ASUU.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while Dr. Faggae, signed on behalf of the union with the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, signing as a witness to the MoU.

The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike presided over the meeting.

Details of the MoU were unknown as at the time of filing this report though government had earlier pledged over N600 billion with an initial cash of N200 billion in 2013 as funding to federal universities in the country.
