March 30, (THEWILL)- Aston Villa earned a morale-boosting 2-0 victory against local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, on Saturday. The win saw the Villains reclaim fourth place in the English Premier League table, while inflicting Wolves’ third defeat in four matches across all competitions.
Despite Ollie Watkins having an early goal ruled out for offside, Villa grew into the contest. Moussa Diaby opened the scoring with a brilliant strike in the 33rd minute. Wolves rallied after the break, but Ezri Konsa doubled Villa’s lead just before the hour mark with a delightful dink over Jose Sa.
Though Matt Doherty went close with a headed effort, Wolves could not find a way back into the match. The result marks Villa’s first home West Midlands derby win in the EPL since December 2003, earning them bragging rights over their near neighbours.
For Unai Emery’s side, it represents a return to winning ways after back-to-back draws. The victory will provide a timely confidence boost ahead of a crucial run of fixtures for the European hopefuls. Wolves, meanwhile, remain 10th after a disappointing display.
