Arteta Contracts Coronavirus, Arsenal Close Training Ground

BEVERLY HILLS, March 12, (THEWILL) – Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for coronavirus and will self-isolate alongside coaching staff and the squad.

The development has caused the cancellation of the team’s Premier League away game against Brighton on Saturday.

Following the development, the Premier League Thursday called an emergency meeting for Friday morning to deliberate on the rest of the games left in the season.

Arteta said: “This is really disappointing but I took the test after feeling poorly. I will be at work as soon as I’m allowed.”

Managing director of Arsenal, Vinai Venkatesham said: “The health of our people and the wider public is our priority and that is where our focus is.

“We are in active dialogue with all the relevant people to manage this situation appropriately, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.”

The Premier League statement reads: “In light of Arsenal’s announcement tonight confirming that their first team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures.”

Arsenal had its league game away against Manchester City on Wednesday postponed because team players had contact with the owner of Greek side Olympiakos, Evangelist Marinakis, who contracted the virus.
