July 13, (THEWILL) – Arsenal wrapped up their training camp in Germany with a 1-1 draw against FC Nurnberg, at the Max-Morlock Stadium.
The Gunners were without captain, Martin Odegaard, due to a pre-match injury. Mikel Arteta fielded a strong lineup, which included the return of William Saliba for the first time since an injury took him out of contention in March. Gabriel Magalhaes assumed the captain’s role in Odegaard’s absence, while Fabio Vieira stepped in admirably in midfield.
Arsenal took control of the game early on, with Bukayo Saka netting a brilliant goal after a lofted pass from Ben White. However, their profligacy in front of goal cost them dearly as Nurnberg managed to equalise through an unfortunate own goal from Jorginho.
Following a dominant first half, Arteta made several changes at halftime to give more players some minutes on the clock, including the introduction of new signing, Kai Havertz. Arsenal gradually created more scoring opportunities, but their finishing let them down. Nurnberg, without registering a shot on target of their own, earned their leveller by capitalising on an error in communication between Arsenal goalkeeper, Hein, who replaced Aaron Ramsdale, and Jorginho, to score the equaliser.
The home team nearly completed a remarkable comeback victory, hitting the crossbar from a rebounded long-range freekick. Arsenal also had their chances, with Balogun missing a decisive opportunity and Walters making a crucial block. The Gunners now head back to London before their upcoming trip to the United States.
