Arsenal Boss Arteta Charged By FA Over Referee Rant

November 16, (THEWILL) – The England Football Association (FA) has charged Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, over his angry criticism of referees, following his side’s 1-0 English Premier League defeat by Newcastle United.

The Spaniard launched a scathing attack on officials after Newcastle’s controversial winner, scored by Anthony Gordon after a move which required extensive VAR checks. Arteta branded the decision to allow the goal “disgraceful” and claimed he was “embarrassed and ashamed” by the officiating.

Now the FA have hit back, charging the Gunners boss with misconduct over his post-match comments. An FA statement said Arteta’s remarks were “insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute”.

The former Arsenal captain has until 21 November to respond to the charge. His rant came after PGMOL chief, Howard Webb, defended officials over the goal, insisting VAR correctly opted against intervening.

Arteta now faces disciplinary action for his incendiary criticism of referees. The Spaniard is no stranger to touchline conflicts and previously served a touchline ban for confronting an official.
