June 28, (THEWILL) – Stefan Ortega, the goalkeeper for Arminia Bielefeld, has reportedly reached a personal agreement with Manchester City ahead of his summer transfer to the Etihad Stadium.
The 29-year-old has played for Die Arminen his entire career, save for a three-year stint at 1860 Munich. He is well-regarded in his home country of Germany. Although he has never received a national team cap, in summer he was a standby for their Euro 2020 squad.
He is now completing a transfer to City, where he will likely replace Ederson as the team’s starting goalkeeper, with USMNT keeper Zack Steffen expected to go on loan. Recently, veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson signed a contract extension with the Etihad.
On Monday night, Ortega wrote a final message to Arminia Bielefeld on his Instagram page. It said: “I appreciate you, Arminia Bielefeld. It is time to part ways. I wanted to express my gratitude to Arminia Bielefeld for an amazing 12 years. It was an incredible adventure that allowed me to grow tremendously as a person and a sportsperson.”
Ortega will join Erling Haaland, who also joined City from the Bundesliga this summer, as the club’s second summer addition to their local League title-winning squad as they bid to challenge for the elusive UEFA Champions League trophy.
