Aregbesola Deletes Facebook Post On Osun Election

July 17, (THEWILL) – Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has deleted a controversial Facebook post, in which he appeared to gloat over the defeat of incumbent governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboyega Oyetola, by Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Aregbesola justified the victory of Ademola Adeleke over incumbent, Oyetola, by uploading a Biblical verse.

Quoting Daniel 4:17, Aregbesola wrote: “This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.”

The post was made at about 8a.m, just moments after the Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed Adeleke as the winner and governor-elect.

The quote was a direct jab at the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he suggests that God is more powerful than he is.

The minister allegedly sponsored Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, a former government secretary, to compete against Oyetola in the party’s direct primary.

After Oyetola’s victory, Adeoti dragged Oyetola to court, seeking an order to disqualify him for not resigning early enough from the party’s national caretaker committee.

While the case was thrown out by the court on Thursday, Aregbesola reportedly left the country to the United States, making himself unavailable for the Osun gubernatorial election.

But after some backlash over the controversial Facebook post, Aregbesola deleted it.

The post generated close to 2,000 comments in less than one hour, with some praising him and some others lambasting him for working for the downfall of his party’s candidate, his successor.

Some of the reactions:

Jamiu Onisona: “Your intention eventually coincides with the wishes of Almighty Allah, You do not have power or ground to do so! Every action has it’s resultant effect, I wish you well.”

Oyebanjo Daramola: “You know there is no coming back from this, even if its not your fault, you will forever be blamed, just hope you are smart enough to realise that!”

Orofin Stephen: “Ogbeni, I can decode your encode here. Congratulations PDP, Congratulations, Senator Adeleke.”

Ojoye Samson Olugbenga: “A house divided against itself can never stand. You have played your role in pulling down your own house, that all you can achieve. Congratulations you won.”

Akinkunmi Dikrullah: “When man sells his relatives cheaply or happy for his relative’s downfall, you can’t even buy them back expensive with money again. A house that divided against itself. A United APC can do anything.”

Oluwashina Ayomi: “After you’ve travelled to overseas and elections is going on in your state, and you were sitting abroad and eating, something you can never do in NIGERIA, definitely you work against the reign of APC in OSUN STATE.”

Afeez Omololu: “The same PDP you supported will surely disgrace you and your followers. Ma salam.”
