March 26, (THEWILL) – Manchester City midfielder, Phil Foden, will miss England’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix.
Foden had hoped to feature in the game after being taken off prematurely in England’s victory against Italy on Thursday. Foden was unfortunate to be withdrawn from the match following Luke Shaw’s red card, with Gareth Southgate needing to bolster his defence by introducing Kieran Trippier for Foden.
Foden felt unwell after training on Saturday, leading to his examination and discovery of appendicitis. The 22-year-old’s absence from the England squad will be another blow to Southgate, who has already lost Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford and Reece James due to injury.
Beyond the Three Lions, Foden’s injury will also be a setback for Manchester City, who are chasing Arsenal for the English Premier League title and preparing for their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich. It remains unclear when Foden will return from his surgery.
Meanwhile, James Maddison is set to start in Foden’s absence during England’s match against Ukraine. Maddison, who has only previously made a substitute appearance for England, is expected to replace Jack Grealish on the left side of the team’s attack, alongside Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka.
England will also be without the suspended Luke Shaw, with Ben Chilwell likely to take his place.
