July 02, (THEWILL) – At Wimbledon on Saturday, Amanda Anisimova defeated Coco Gauff, to reach the fourth round of the Grand Slam.
Gauff entered the match on a high note and the prominent American appeared to be moving on after winning the first set in a tie-break, but her opponent, who is 20 years old and two years her senior, rallied to win 6-7(4) 6-2 6-1.
The two Americans, whose ages add up to 38 years provided a preview of what the future of women’s tennis promises by serving up high-quality passages interspersed with frustrating periods.
Gauff jumped out to an early lead and had a chance to double break the first set, but she chose not to do so as Anisimova gradually gained ground.
Early on in the match, Anisimova suffered from unforced errors that cost her, but as the match went on, she made fewer of them, which tipped the scales in her favour. After two hours and seven minutes, the 20-year-old maintained her composure and served out to love to secure her place in round four.
