May 16, (THEWILL) – The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Managing Director, Nigeria Security and Minting Company, Alhaji Abbas Umar Masanawa, have resigned their appointments.
While Amaechi is a presidential aspirant, Masanawa is contesting in the governorship election in Katsina State. The duo are seeking political offices on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their resignation followed a directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to members of his cabinet and other public officials with political ambition to resign their appointments.
The President had through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, directed all ministers and political appointees contesting for various elective positions to resign their appointments on or before Monday, May 16, 2022.
Amaechi had on Sunday in Kaduna, hinted of plans to quit the Federal Executive Council this Monday.
The Minister had said: “Even though I am resigning tomorrow (Monday), my colleagues will continue with the over 200km rail project of Kaduna-Kano, which 80km has already been completed.”
Sources close to the Minister, however confirmed that he submitted his resignation letter on Monday to President Buhari through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha .
On his part, Masanawa who confirmed his resignation while fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja on Monday, said: “Absolutely, I have abided completely with the presidential directive. And I’ve resigned my appointment as the managing director, and chief executive of Nigeria Security, Printing and Minting. I sent in my resignation through the chairman of the board, who also happens to be the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
Asked if he has personally informed President Buhari about his intentions, he said, “Yes through my immediate boss, who is the Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria. The governor of the central bank is the chairman of the board of Nigeria security, printing and minting. I have surely done that.”
