May 10, (THEWILL) – Alfie Haaland, the father of Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland, has downplayed an incident during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg at the Bernabeu.
In the incident, which the older Haaland referred to as “good banter”, the 50-year-old was captured in a video, engaged in an exchange with Real Madrid supporters while celebrating Kevin De Bruyne’s equaliser for City. He cupped his ears in response to taunts from fans near the executive box before being escorted away by security staff.
Reports monitored by THEWILL in the Spanish media claimed that Haaland had thrown food at home fans, but he denied the allegations, stating that he had been asked to move to another nearby location. In a Twitter post, Haaland explained: “RM was not happy we were celebrating KDB goal. Other than that, we had to move because RM fans [were] not happy with 1-1.”
He also denied throwing peanuts at Real Madrid fans, stating: “I did not. Not true. We had some good banter with Madrid fans. They were not happy when City scored. Typical. Then we had to move 50 meters away. Nothing more. All happy. Well nearly.”
Erling Haaland has had an exceptional debut season with Manchester City, scoring an impressive 51 goals in all competitions.
