Alcaraz, Swiatek Lead US Open Entry Lists As Current Champions, Highest Ranked Players

August 21, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, the 2022 US Open men’s and women’s singles champions, top the entry lists for the 2023 tournament as the current world number ones.

The United States leads the player field with 25 total players earning direct entry. 14 American women and 11 American men have qualified by ranking, with two players ranked in the world’s top ten for each draw: Jessica Pegula at number four and Coco Gauff at number seven for the women, and Taylor Fritz at number nine and Frances Tiafoe at number ten for the men.

In total, 14 players – nine men and five women – are entered using injury-protected rankings. This includes Americans Jennifer Brady and Reilly Opelka. Brady, playing her first tournament in nearly two years this week in Canada, is expected to make her return to a major tournament for the first time since the 2021 French Open. Opelka last played in Washington DC a year ago.

Other notable players entered with protected rankings include 2014 US Open winner, Marin Cilic, his opponent in that final, Kei Nishikori, and former top ten players, Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic. Nishikori, who, like Brady, had been out since 2021, made a successful return in June by winning an ATP Challenger event in Puerto Rico.

The 2023 US Open entry lists suggest an exciting tournament ahead, with the defending champions looking to repeat and several big-name players making injury comebacks.
