AIU Suspends Indian Discuss Thrower Kaur For Doping Offence

May 05, (THEWILL) – The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally banned Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur from all competitions after she tested positive for a banned substance.

According to the AIU, the Indian athlete, who finished sixth in last year’s Olympics in Tokyo, has reportedly broken World Athletics’ anti-doping regulations after her positive test for stanozolol, a synthetic steroid derived from testosterone, was confirmed by the AIU.

Kaur will be unable to compete until a final decision is made, which will jeopardise her preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Asian Games in Hangzhou this year.

If the final decision is not contrary to the findings, Kaur might potentially be banned for up to four years.

After raising her mark to 66.59 metres at the Indian Grand Prix IV in June last year, the 26-year-old currently holds the national record in the women’s discus throw and is the only Indian woman to throw over 65 metres, which she did for the first time three months ago at the Federation Cup.

Kaur finished second in the qualification round with 64 metres before finishing sixth overall with 63.70 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Since 1974, World Athletics has prohibited the use of stanozolol. It made news during the 1988 Olympics, when Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was deprived of his 100m gold medal after testing positive with the substance.
