BEVERLY HILLS, February 01, (THEWILL) – On Friday, January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), in adjudicating the case brought to it against world football governing body, FIFA, by the suspended President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), decided against the sanction pronounced by the FIFA adjudication chamber against Mr. Ahmad Ahmad.

The court decision effectively restored Ahmad to his previous position. Consequently, at the invitation of the Acting President, Mr. Constant Omari, the CAF Emergency Committee met on Sunday, January 31 by video conference and noted the decision of CAS with acceptance.

With that acceptance, Ahmad resumes duties as President but it still leaves the question of his candidacy for the position in the upcoming CAF elections. For that, Ahmad will respect the Confederation’s due process and procedures, and will meet CAF Governance Committee on Monday, February 1.

Ahmad did not hesitate to comment on the progress made by the continental football body in his absence, reserving particular praise for acting President, Constant Omari, who handled the affairs of the body in the weeks after Ahmad’s suspension.

“I warmly thank Constant Omari for having assumed the presidency in recent weeks. In particular, he brilliantly implemented the organization of CHAN TOTAL Cameroon 2020. I will bring this magnificent competition to a close, and allow football, as always, to triumph.”

Ahmad Ahmad was President of the Malagasy Football Federation before his election to the CAF presidency on the 17th of March, 2017. His tenure at the head of football administration on the continent has been marked by numerous administrative and sports reforms intended to enable the institution to raise its standards towards greater excellence and continue grassroots development of football.

However, a FIFA investigation led the global institution to ban and fine Ahmad for what it termed “governance issues”. In their statement, FIFA said Ahmad had “breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President”.

He was fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($220,000) by FIFA for the misdeeds, which related to “the organisation and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca” and his involvement in CAF’s dealings with a sports equipment company.
