April 17, (THEWILL) – The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has passed a vote of confidence in Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, current acting national chairman.

THEWILL reports that the confidence vote is coming before Thursday’s meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

Damagum’s continued stay as acting chairman has attracted serious opposition from many leaders and members of the party loyal to the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.

But those loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Ezenwo Wike, insist that Damagum be allowed to continue in office until a national convention is held in 2025 to elect a new national chairman.

Damagum enjoys the backing of Nyesom Wike, while former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, enjoys that of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as some bigwigs of the party, particularly from the North Central, are against Amb. Damagum remained as the Acting National Chairman of the main opposition political party.

However, in what seemed to be a dramatic turn to what will play out on Thursday at the NEC meeting, the Party’s NWC reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Damagum.

An unsigned statement credited to the party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, informed that “the decision of the NWC which came at the end of its 584th meeting at the Party’s National Secretariat on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, is in commendation of the efforts and commitment of the Acting National Chairman to stabilise and reposition the PDP as the main opposition Party in Nigeria.”

The Deputy National Chairman (South), Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, presided over the motion for a Vote of Confidence on the Acting National Chairman, which was moved by the National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Ali Odefa and seconded by the National Treasurer, Hon. Yayari Mohammed.

The NWC assured members of its commitment to ensuring the continued stability, growth and success of the party at all times.
