SAN FRANCISCO, April 08, (THEWILL) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Wednesday, promised to champion citizens rights by bringing the Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill to the state if elected governor on Saturday.
In a statement personally signed by him, Agbaje said: “The Freedom of Information Bill is an Act that gives every citizen a legal right of access to information, records, and documents held by government bodies and private bodies carrying out public functions.
“It shall apply to all arms of the Lagos State and Local governments, the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary.”
“In order to ensure Transparency in my government, and to create a legal footing to the war against corruption, I shall send to the Lagos State Assembly, a bill domesticating the 2011 Freedom of Information Bill.”
“The current Lagos State APC government has consistently refused to do this, thereby hindering Trasparency and Accountability in the affairs of the state.”
“Once it becomes law, it shall ensure that there is proactive disclosure of information from government, and I will set up a central clearinghouse for all requests to ensure its proper and timely implementation.”
“I shall, as Lagos State Governor, side with the people of Lagos State in believing that their elected officials, myself included, should be held accountable, and this bill shall act as a tool, the first of many, that the people will be able use to legally do so.”
