SAN FRANCISCO, July 18, (THEWILL) – Rampaging Boko Haram insurgents, again on Friday, stormed Damboa, a town in the southern part of troubled Borno State, leaving several people dead.
Friday’s attack, which was the second by the terrorists in two weeks, claimed the lives of some of the insurgents as well as military and security personnel.
The insurgents, who drove the military away from the town two weeks ago, had also rebuffed the attempt by the military to return to the town as they laid siege to the town, thus forcing the remaining soldiers to return to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
But the insurgents returned Friday morning, capitalising on the absence of security officials to unleash more havoc.
A local resident told THEWILL that some of the vigilante group members confirmed that the gunmen sneaked into the town at dawn and started shooting indiscriminately.
“Since the last attack, Damboa has no police or soldier. It is only the vigilantes that are there and we know their limitations.
“The death casualty could be very high because my contacts in Damboa said they are still picking and piling the corpses, but many houses, nearly half of what remains of the several earlier attacks on the town have been burnt,” an indigene of the area, Abbas Gava, said in Maiduguri.
But a senior security official, who craved anonymity, confirmed the attack to THEWILL saying “no details on extent of damage or casualty are yet known.”
