June 15, (THEWILL) – Guinea Bissau’s path to the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is almost certain as they clinched a crucial 1-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday.

The Djurtus’ triumph in Bissau propelled them to the summit of Group A with 10 points, narrowly edging out Nigeria, who have a game in hand, by a solitary point. The Super Eagles, who are set to face Sierra Leone in the group’s other encounter, can secure their own AFCON berth with a win on Sunday.

The lone goal of the game was delivered by substitute Zinho Gano, as the match unfolded with caution on both sides. The first half lacked clear-cut chances, leaving Mama Balde frustrated as he failed to find the target. Despite Balde’s attempts, including a close-range effort and an ambitious overhead kick, Guinea Bissau’s breakthrough did not materialise until the second half.

In the 55th minute, Gano, who had just stepped onto the field, seized his opportunity when Sao Tome’s goalkeeper spilt a shot from Elucidates Gomes. Gano latched on to the loose ball to find the net from close range, granting Guinea Bissau a well-deserved win and one foot in the door of the forthcoming continental tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

Although the Djurtus commanded possession and grew more comfortable after the goal, they could not extend their lead. Gomes had a few opportunities, but none posed a significant threat to the scoreline before the final whistle. As Guinea Bissau savours their achievement, their final group match against Sierra Leone awaits, determining their ultimate fate on the path to the AFCON competition.
