AFCON Qualifiers: Cameroon Beat Mozambique 4-1 With Aboubakar Double

A brace by Vincent Aboubakar, the Besiktas striker, gave Cameroon the upper hand over visiting Mozambique with a 4-1 victory at Stade de la Reunification on Thursday. The win saw Cameroon climb to the top of Group F of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series.

Aboubakar scored the first goal of the tie in the 38th minute after being set-up by Christian Bassogog. Then, the former FC Porto man doubled the scoreline two minutes into the second half.

Zambo Anguissa made it three in the 56th minute off of an assist from midfielder Nicolas Ngamaleu. Then, Mozambique tried to rally for a come back through a Kamo-Kamo Cumbane’s goal in the 74th minute.

However, it was too little too late as Fulham man Zambo Anguissa, put the contest beyond the visitor’s reach when he turned provider for substitute N’Jie who struck to seal victory for Cameroon.

It was Cameroon’s second straight victory of the campaign after starting the qualifiers with a goalless home draw against the Cape Verde Islands. The Indomitable Lions entered Round three second on the table, but turned on the burners to dislodge Mozambique from top spot where they now sit three points clear.

The seriousness with which Cameroon attacked the game and dismissed Mozambique belied the fact that as hosts of the next AFCON, they did not need the qualifiers but were only participating to earn some game time. It all hinted at a bright future for their football under Portuguese coach Toni Conceicao.

The Indomitable Lions will now visit Mozambique for the return leg slated for Maputo on Monday, November 16.
