AFCON: Health, Medical Preparation In Focus As Cote D’Ivoire 2023 Draws Near

July 26, (THEWILL) – The CAF Medical Division has been hard at work as the countdown to the exciting TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cote D’Ivoire 2023, continues.

Recently, the division concluded a two-day CAF Medical Workshop in Cote D’Ivoire, which was led by CAF’s Medical Manager, Dr Boubakary Sidiki, along with the expertise of CAF Medical Committee Member, Dr Yasser Abdel Rahman.

The focal point of the workshop, held at the Laforge Hotel in Abidjan, was to prepare for Africa’s grandest sporting event, with a special emphasis on Health and Medical matters – a critical component in hosting such a major tournament. Medical practitioners, including skilled doctors, physios, and paramedics, gathered to learn and enhance their knowledge on CAF’s latest protocols for responding to medical emergencies. These encompassed a wide range of scenarios, from handling concussions, cardiac arrests, head and neck trauma, and heat stroke, to addressing any other unforeseen medical emergencies, both on and off the field.

Dr Sidiki, speaking after the successful gathering, highlighted the evolving importance of health and medical readiness in hosting international competitions. He stressed the significance of ensuring that the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and host cities are fully equipped and prepared to host the global event next year. Given the influx of thousands of passionate fans from around the world, the Medical Division’s primary role involves ensuring that all stadiums, hospitals, airports, and hotels are well-prepared to address any medical requirements that may arise during the tournament.

In addition to the Medical workshop, the CAF’s Anti-Doping Unit took the opportunity to share essential insights on the latest developments related to Anti-Doping measures and the necessary preparations to maintain a level playing field ahead of the competition.
