January 23, (THEWILL) – The Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a fine of $15,000 on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following crowd trouble at the recent Africa Cup of Nations match.
The incident occurred during the Group B clash between Ghana and Cape Verde on 14 January. According to the CAF Safety and Security Official, two groups of Ghanaian supporters were involved in a physical confrontation at half-time in section 18 of the stadium. Tear gas was reportedly utilised by security forces to dispel the disturbance.
After reviewing the facts, evidence and legal arguments presented by both sides, the CAF Disciplinary Board came to the decision to issue the financial sanction. The GFA now has 60 days to pay the $15,000 fine.
In response, the GFA has called upon Ghana fans and supporter groups present at the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire to behave responsibly and within the laws of the game. They plan to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and supporter group leadership to prevent any further issues from arising.
The AFCON first group stage match, which Ghana lost by two goals to one, was the harbinger of things to come. Since then, the Black Stars have drawn 2-2 with Egypt and by the scoreline with Mozambique to place the West African nation on the brink of an early ouster from the continental showpiece. Their quest to lift their 5th African title is now extremely thin.
