UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, says he will “make a dangerous man look easy” in his title defence against Steve Strickland at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia, this weekend.
Adesanya acknowledged that Strickland is a dangerous opponent, currently on a two-fight winning streak. However, the Nigerian New Zealander believes his own superior ability will be too much for the American to handle.
“He only got this fight because I actually asked for this fight,” said Adesanya. “He would have never got this opportunity without me. I know he’s dangerous because anyone in the top five or top 10 is dangerous. But I’ve just made a habit of making dangerous men look easy before and I’m going to do it again.”
Adesanya defeated Alex Pereira in impressive fashion earlier this year and suggested Strickland should try wrestling rather than striking if he wants to beat the champion. “If he’s smart and he’s learned his lesson he should try to actually wrestle maybe or do something different. So, I’m ready for everything.”
The 34-year-old also dismissed any comparisons between himself and Pereira when it comes to striking ability. “Pereira is great at what he does. He’s a smart fighter but he’s [at] a different level with me, a different artistry with me that I feel like he’s never ever seen before.”
UFC 293 takes place this Saturday night. Adesanya will headline the event as he looks to retain his middleweight title against Strickland.
