September 14, (THEWILL) – Rivers United defeated Heartland FC 3-1 in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match on Saturday. The game, held at Rivers United’s home ground, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, saw former Super Eagles teammates, Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke, face off as managers for the first time.
Tunde Olaniyi opened the scoring for Rivers United in the fourth minute. Christian Molokwu equalised for Heartland just before half-time. However, Rivers United dominated the second half with Kabir Abdullahi netting twice, in the 68th and 94th minutes, to seal the victory.
This result puts Rivers United second in the league table with four points from two matches. Heartland, meanwhile, remain at the bottom without any points after two consecutive losses. Their previous match ended in a 3-1 defeat against George’s former side Enyimba.
George had emphasised the importance of winning their first home game. The team delivered on this goal, bouncing back from their goalless draw against Bendel Insurance in the season opener.
Heartland’s Amuneke will need to regroup his squad as they search for their first points of the season as quickly as their next fixture. They are up against.
