Abducted Zamfara Varsity Students, Staff Regain Freedom

September 23, (THEWILL) – The abducted students and staff of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State, have regained their freedom after seven months in captivity.

The victims were kidnapped during a bandit attack in the Gusau area in February 2024.

A counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, Zagazola Malama, confirmed their release in an update shared on Monday on X.

He wrote: “The students of Federal University Gusau (FUG) and some staff members who were abducted seven months ago have regained their freedom from their captors.

“It was gathered that the students and staff were kidnapped during an attack by bandits in the Gusau area in February of this year.

“After spending an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all the abducted individuals have returned in good health. Although details of how their release was secured remain unclear, security forces were said to have played a crucial role in their rescue.”

When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command spokesman said he was not aware of the development, adding that he would verify and get back.

Authorities in Zamfara including the State Government and Police Command, are yet to confirm the development.
