March 19, (THEWILL)- The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, is scheduled to inaugurate TETFund Projects worth over N2 billion at the University of Calabar.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Florence Obi, who disclosed this during a media parley, said the inauguration is part of activities lined up for the 36th convocation ceremony of the University.

Professor Obi explained that the five projects were executed largely with TETFund and included projects abandoned by previous administrations in the institution.

She said the projects, which comprise three pavilions and two hostels, are worth over N2 billion and the Education Minister will inaugurate them alongside TETFund officials.

She also disclosed that during the convocation, 32 students will be awarded first-class degrees, adding that this is the highest number in the history of the institution.

Others are 8,415 students who will earn first degrees, 754 with masters degrees, and 438 with doctorate degrees.

Explaining why the institution recorded its highest number of first-class graduates since its inception, Professor Obi said she introduced quality assurance measures and also instituted a scholarship scheme to foster positive competition among students.

In her words, “We have put in place some quality assurance measures, customised booklets and reduced sorting syndrome in the system.

“We introduced quality assurance measures and other steps that will make students sit up and read their books and the students did. Students are now reading so we have that number graduating with first-class.

“We also introduced a scholarship scheme in all the 110 departments across the school and we expect that the positive competition will be huge subsequently,” Professor Obi said.

She also disclosed that as part of the convocation, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev. Dr. Mathew Hassan Kukah, will deliver the 36th Convocation Lecture of the University of Calabar.

She said Bishop Kukah’s convocation lecture will be titled “Harmonizing Diversities For National Development”, which will be held on Thursday, at the University’s International Conference Centre.

Other activities lined up include a research fair, gala night for PhD graduates and their supervisors, thanksgiving service, visit to traditional rulers and many others.
