August 20, (THEWILL) – At the conclusion of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Aitana Bonmati was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the competition after leading Spain to their first-ever title with a 1-0 victory over England on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Barcelona midfielder put in a masterful performance throughout the tournament, featuring in every match and controlling the midfield with her excellent passing, vision and technical ability. She was a pivotal presence for Spain, shining brightly as she orchestrated their play and was deserving of the award.

After the victory, a delighted Bonmati told reporters “I don’t have the words. I am so proud, we had a great tournament.” In addition to Bonmati’s MVP performance, Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa claimed the Golden Boot as the top scorer with five goals, England goalkeeper, Mary Earps, won the Golden Glove award, and young Spanish striker, Salma Paralluelo, was named best young player.

Spain’s maiden World Cup triumph was built on a foundation of teamwork, but Bonmati’s individual brilliance in orchestrating their play truly stood out. Her versatility, work rate and leadership were invaluable throughout Spain’s historic campaign.

After years of near misses, Spain has finally claimed World Cup glory, with Bonmati’s golden touch driving them to victory.
