June 29, (THEWILL) – Former Abia State governor and Senator representing Abia North in the National Assembly, Orji Uzor Kalu, has congratulated a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, on his election as President of the 10th Senate.

The former Senate Majority Whip also appealed to other Senators of the 10th National Assembly to come together and support the leadership of Godswill Akpabio.

Kalu’s appeal followed media reports that about 22 Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have perfected plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to protest the outcome of the election of the Senate’s Presidency.

Kalu, who also aspired for the office of the President of the Senate along with other Senators, including former Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, maintained that the election that produced Akpabio as President was transparent, free and fair.

Insisting that Akpabio won the election, Kalu pledged support and loyalty to Akpabio’s led Senate.

In a recorded video posted on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday, Kalu dismissed reports of a seeming division in the Red Chamber, saying “There are no pro and anti-Akpabio Senators”.

His words: “Let me be honest with you, the election in the Senate was very transparent. Senator Akpabio won the election. It was free, it was fair.

“I congratulate the Clerk of the National Assembly, I congratulate the Clerk and all the Staff of the Senate. You know I cannot lie against my conscience. Akpabio won the election hands down.

“There was no controversy about who won the election. If there is anything another person wants to say, that is their business. Akpabio, to my conscience, to my seeing and to my honour, won the election and we have since congratulated him.

“There are no two Senate in the history of the Senate. There is only one Senate. On the 13th of June, was the day we decided to have one Senate.

“There are no pro and anti-Akpabio Senators. Even Senator Abdulaziz Yari understands we have to work with Akpabio. He is the Senate President. We have congratulated him and I am using this Sallah period to appeal to our people to come together and work as one Senate.”
